- Congratulations to CMA faculty member, Lindsey Brown, for her excellent work in the role of Sheila in the Trustus Theater production of Hair, which ran from June 18 through July 17. The setting is a park in New York in 1968. The cast members gave a strong, energetic and emotion filled presentation of the work. A fine job was done by all.
- CMA faculty member, Steve Sloan, and former faculty member, Jonathan Gangi, will be performing at the Summer Guitar Workshop and Competition at Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, Tennessee. The workshop dates are June 27 through July 3. Members of the faculty will include Stanley Yates, Professor of Music at Austin Peay State University, Stephen Aron, Professor of Music at the University of Akron, and Mir Ali, director of the Amherst School of Guitar. We send best wishes with Steve and Jonathan.
- The Rosario Guitar Festival and Competition was held May 13-16, 2010,
at the USC School of Music. CMA faculty member, Steve Sloan, took third place honors in the competition. Congratulations, Steve!
- CMA faculty member, Steve Sloan, is Director of the Columbia Guitar Orchestra. He
led the Orchestra in concert on Sunday, March 21, 2010, at 3:00 P. M. The concert was held in the Richland County Public Library auditorium, 1431 Assembly Street, Columbia. Admission was free and the public was invited.
Congratulations to CMA family member, Morgan Ward, who earned a superior rating and gold medal for her participation in The South Carolina Independent School Association Music Festival. In the event which was held on March 11 at the University of South Carolina School of Music, Morgan sang I Attempt from Love's Sickness to Fly by Henry Purcell.
Morgan is a junior at Cardinal Newman High School. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Mike Ward of Columbia.
- On Sunday afternoon, December 20, Alex and Jackie Rice presented a program of piano music for the residents of Lodge at Ascension in Irmo.
A student of Jami Hawkins, Alex performed Jazz pieces by Vince Guaraldi and Dave Brubeck. Jackie presented music of Beethoven, Brahms, Tchaikovski, and Debussy. She studies with Robert Neese.
Alex and Jackie are sophomores at Hammond Academy. They are the daughters of Pam and Gary Rice of Columbia.
- On Sunday afternoon, November 8, members of The Academy family provided musical entertainment for the holiday open house at Marketplace Antiques on Meeting in West Columbia. For a second year, CMA musicians participated in a relaxing afternoon of nice people, tasty refreshments, beautiful antiques, and of course, music.
- Participants included Academy president, English Morris; Rob Borucki, Katherine Buchanan, and Alex Rice (students of Jami Hawkins); Ben Catoe and Jackie Rice (students of Robert Neese), and faculty member Ryan Smith. Each pianist performed to the smiles and compliments of listeners.
- Faculty guitarists Jeff Harris and Alan Knight, along with Jake Skeppstron (student of Mr. Knight), delighted shoppers with their talents. The soothing music of acoustic guitars, masterfully rendered, added a peaceful touch to the afternoon's program.
- Karen Burton, faculty violinist, also played, offering her gift of lovely music. Expertly played and warmly received, Mrs. Burton's contribution concluded a pleasant afternoon of music making.
CMA family member, Lawson Smith, played the role of The Bishop as well as playing in the percussion section of the orchestra for the Dreher High School production of Les Miserables, November 19-21.
Lawson is the son of Sid and Martha Smith of Columbia. He is a senior at Dreher and at The Academy is a piano student of Robert Neese.
- On Saturday, October 24, Davis Borucki won the
intermediate division of the Philadelphia Inquirer Sudoku National Tournament in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and the accompanying $3,000 prize.
Davis is the son of Dr. and Mrs. Robert Borucki (Caroline) of Columbia. He is a sophomore at Richland Northeast High School and is a member of the CMA family, studying piano with Jami Hawkins.
- CMA faculty member Steve Sloan gave a Graduate solo guitar recital on Wednesday, October 14, 2009 at the University of South Carolina School of Music, Columbia, SC.
Composers whose music was performed were J. S. Bach, Domenico Scarlatti, Enrique Granados, Mauro Giuliani, and Nicolo Paganini.

- CMA faculty member Ryan Smith performed a solo piano concert on Thursday, November 19, 2009 at Jackson Hall of Columbia's First Presbyterian Church, 1324 Marion Street.
The program consisted of music originally composed for genres other than the piano. Performed were Chorale Preludes by J. S. Bach, set for the piano by Ferriccio Busoni; Variations on a theme of Christoph Gluck by W. A. Mozart; Pieces from the ballet Romeo and Juliet by Sergei Prokofiev; and Lieder by Franz Schubert in transcriptions by Franz Liszt.
The concert was given through the Music Ministry of First Presbyterian Church and was free and open to the public.
- On May 28, 2009, Ben Catoe gave his senior piano recital at
St. John's Episcopal Church, Columbia. He played two movements from the Mozart Sonata in F Major (K. 322), the Gigue from the English Suite in a minor (BWV 807) by J. S. Bach, Impromptu in A Flat Major (Op. 142) by Franz Schubert and the Funeral March in b minor (Op. 35) by Fredric Chopin. To conclude the program, he and his teacher, Robert Neese, played an arrangement for four hands of the third movement of the Brandenburg Concerto (BWV 1048) by Bach. - Ben is the son of Mark and Barbara Catoe of Columbia. He is a graduate of Richland Northeast High School. Ben has been a student of Mr. Neese at the Carolina Music Academy for nine years. He is now a freshman at the University of South Carolina and is continuing his study of music at The Academy.

Several students from Ryan Smith’s piano studio were winners in the MTNA Achievement Program for the fall semester. The teacher, student, and parents of each participant each set a number of required goals for the semester, with each student being required to fulfill a minimum number of goals. These goals involved technical exercises, memorization of solo pieces, theory assignments, and consistent weekly practice. The following students were winners in the program by virtue of their successfully meeting these goals: Palmer Dayhuff, Tierre Gibbs, Katie Kendall, and Trad Mayson. |
